A drawing should let a competent supplier manufacture and inspect the intended part without having to reverse-engineer your assumptions.
Identify the part unambiguously
Include part number, revision, title, units, scale where relevant and drawing sheet information. Ensure the drawing revision matches the CAD release and BOM.
Dimension function, not every edge
Provide the dimensions needed to define and inspect the part while avoiding redundant chains that can conflict. Use baseline, ordinate or GD&T methods where they communicate function more clearly.
Define tolerances
Include general tolerances for unspecified dimensions and explicit tolerances for critical ones. Do not rely on the displayed number of decimal places unless your drawing standard explicitly defines that convention.
Specify material and finish
Material grade, heat treatment, coating, texture, color and surface finish should be controlled where they matter. Avoid vague notes such as “aluminum” when alloy or temper affects function.
Check manufacturability notes
Call out threads, inserts, welds, deburring, edge breaks, sealing surfaces, inspection requirements and special process notes. Confirm that every note can actually be verified.
Final cross-check
Compare drawing to CAD: overall size, hole count, thread callouts, datum scheme, section views and revision. Then open exported PDF/DXF independently before release to ensure fonts, linework and symbols survived translation.
Drawing & GPS verification
Confirm the drawing standard named on the product documentation and use the current applicable ISO GPS or ASME Y14.5 requirements.
