A strong mechanical engineering portfolio demonstrates how you think, not just how attractive your CAD renders look.
Show the problem first
For each project, explain the requirement, constraints and your responsibility. Hiring managers need to know whether you created the design, analyzed it, detailed it, coordinated manufacturing or only produced a render.
Show engineering decisions
Include the alternatives you considered and why one was selected. A simple section view with notes about load path, assembly, material or tooling can demonstrate more engineering judgement than ten beauty renders.
Include manufacturing evidence
Where confidentiality allows, show drawings, tolerance decisions, DFM findings, prototypes, inspection results or production photos. These prove that your CAD work connects to real manufacturing.
Protect confidential work
Never publish client geometry or NDA material without permission. Recreate generic examples, redact dimensions or build a personal demonstration project that shows the same skill without exposing proprietary information.
Keep it concise
A portfolio is not an archive. Select a few projects that demonstrate different strengths—mechanism design, molded part DFM, drawings, simulation, prototyping—and make each story easy to scan.
Link skills to evidence
Instead of listing “Creo, SolidWorks, GD&T, DFM” as isolated keywords, link each capability to a project page where the reader can see how you used it.
Release verification
Validate assumptions against current material data, applicable standards, supplier capability, inspection strategy and the complete product load case.
