A manufacturable design can still create delays if the file package is ambiguous, broken or missing the information the supplier needs.
Freeze the intended revision
Name the release clearly and remove obsolete geometry from the delivery folder. A supplier should not have to guess whether FINAL_v7_NEW2.step is newer than FINAL_FINAL.step.
Validate solid geometry
Regenerate the native model, check for failed features, confirm intended bodies, and run geometry checks where available. Open the neutral export independently and verify that it remains a watertight solid when that is the intent.
Confirm units and scale
Unit errors are still common in STL and some downstream workflows. Record the intended units in the drawing/readme and check at least one known dimension after export.
Use the right file types
A common release includes the native CAD file, STEP for neutral exchange, PDF drawing for human-readable requirements and additional process-specific files such as DXF for profiles or STL/3MF for additive manufacturing.
Separate geometry from requirements
Do not expect the STEP file alone to communicate material, finish, tolerances, heat treatment, critical characteristics or inspection notes. Put those requirements on a controlled drawing or specification.
Create a simple release manifest
A one-page manifest listing part number, revision, file names and purpose can prevent expensive misunderstandings. For assemblies, include a BOM and identify purchased versus manufactured components.
CAD exchange verification
Validate the exported file in an independent viewer or receiving CAD system and keep revision identity consistent across native, neutral and drawing deliverables.
