Why engineers choose TPU

TPU spans a broad hardness range and can combine elasticity with abrasion resistance. It is useful when a rigid thermoplastic would crack or when compliant contact is needed.

Manufacturing routes

TPU is commonly encountered in Injection molding · FDM/FFF. The process route matters because material condition, anisotropy, tolerances, surface finish and residual stress can differ substantially between molding, machining and additive manufacturing.

Design considerations

Geometry should reflect the chosen Shore hardness. Very soft grades behave differently in thin walls, snap details and print feeding. Sharp notches should be avoided because repeated flexing concentrates strain.

Environment and durability

Oil, hydrolysis, UV and temperature resistance vary strongly by TPU chemistry. Polyester- and polyether-based grades can behave differently, so generic TPU labels are insufficient for final specification.

Relative engineering profile

These 1–5 ratings are deliberately qualitative. They help shortlist materials but must not replace grade-specific datasheets, testing or supplier guidance.

What to compare before specifying it

Compare TPU with silicone when higher temperature or permanent elastic behavior is needed, and with flexible PA/PP when a semi-rigid rather than rubber-like response is desired.

Specification note: Material names such as ABS, PA6, 316L or Ti-6Al-4V describe families or alloy designations, not a complete purchasing specification. Grade, temper/condition, reinforcement, colorant, certification, processing route and supplier data can materially change performance.
